HUMAN INTELLECTUAL ABILITIES IN RUSSIAN, GERMAN AND FRENCH YOUNG PEOPLE’S SLANG

Background. We consider the chosen topic to be relevant, since it is necessary to conduct a systemic comparative study of substandard lexical and phraseological units to reveal the national features of the linguistic worldview. Another reason is that so far linguistic studies have not focused on intelligence-related language units found in slang of different national languages. Our paper aims to analyze the human intellectual abilities reflected in Russian, German and French young people’s slang.
Materials and methods. The data for study was over 650 slang terms denoting intellectual traits. To analyze the linguistic data we employed descriptive, comparative and statistical methods, generalization and classification of language units.
Results. The analysis revealed three groups of slang terms related to intelligence. Each group comprises several sets of synonyms, which can be identical, relatively identical and nonidentical.
Conclusions. We have described the findings obtained through the systematic analysis of intelligence-related units. The semantic properties of the units under study are interpreted through the semantics of the predication that plays the main role in their interpretation. We have revealed the principal groups of intelligence-related language units, which comprise identical, relatively identical and nonidenti-cal sets of synonyms. We have outlined the guidelines for comparative studies of slang terms denoting intellectual abilities.
